Jim Acosta Not Called on Again
President Trump devoted much of Thursday's press briefing, which he called to announce a new nominee for secretary of labor, to attacking the media. He criticized the printing in general and had this substitution with CNN's senior White Business firm correspondent, Jim Acosta.
DONALD TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE United states: Jim?
JIM ACOSTA, CNN SENIOR WHITE House CORRESPONDENT: Mr. President, thank you very much. And just for the record, we don't detest you. I don't detest y'all.
TRUMP: OK.
ACOSTA: ... pass that along.
TRUMP: Ask Jeff Zucker how he got his job.
ACOSTA: If I may follow upward on some of the questions that accept taken place so far here, sir, and I don't know which microphone to concord here. I've got three microphones.
TRUMP: (INAUDIBLE) people, and your ratings aren't equally adept as some of the other people that are waiting (ph).
ACOSTA: They're pretty good correct now, really, Mr. President.
TRUMP: Get ahead, Jim.
ACOSTA: If I may ask, sir, you said earlier that WikiLeaks was revealing data about the Hillary Clinton campaign during the election wheel. You welcomed that at one entrada rally. You said you lot loved WikiLeaks. At another campaign press conference, you lot chosen on the Russians to find the missing 30,000 due east-mails.
I'one thousand wondering, sir, if you lot --
TRUMP: She'south actually missing 33,000 and then it got extended with a whole --
ACOSTA: Possibly my numbers are off a little bit likewise.
TRUMP: No, no, but I did say 30, but it was actually college than that.
ACOSTA: If I may ask yous, sir, it sounds as though y'all exercise not have much credibility hither when it comes to leaking if that is something that you encouraged during the campaign.
TRUMP: (INAUDIBLE). Ready?
ACOSTA: If I may ask you that --
TRUMP: No, no, simply permit me do one at a fourth dimension. Do you mind?
ACOSTA: If I may enquire a follow-up. Yes, sir.
TRUMP: So in one case, you're talking about highly classified information. In the other case, yous're talking almost John Podesta maxim bad things well-nigh the boss. I will say this. If John Podesta said this about me, and he was working for me, I would take fired him and then fast your head would accept spun. He said terrible things about her. But it wasn't classified data. But in one case you're talking about classified.
Regardless, if y'all look at the RNC, we had a very strong -- at my proposition and I give Reince great credit for this -- at my suggestion, because I know something about this globe, I said I desire a very strong defensive mechanism. I don't want to be hacked. And we did that. And you have seen that they tried to hack u.s.a. and they failed. The DNC did not practice that. And if they did it, they could not have been hacked. Just they were and terrible things came in.
And, you know, the simply that I think is unfair is some of the things, they were -- when I heard some of those things, I picked up the papers the side by side forenoon, I said, oh this is going to be front page. It wasn't even in the papers.
Once more, if I had that happen to me, it would exist the biggest story in the history of publishing or the head of newspapers. I would accept been the headline in every newspaper. I mean, remember of it. They gave her the questions to a debate and she should have reported herself. Why didn't Hillary Clinton denote that I'm sorry, but I have been given the questions to a debate or a boondocks hall, and I feel that it'south inappropriate, and I desire to turn in CNN for not doing a good job.
ACOSTA: And if I may follow upward that, just something that Jonathan Karl was asking you about. You said that the leaks are real but the news is faux. I guess I don't understand. It seems that there'due south a disconnect at that place. If the data coming from those leaks is real, then how tin can the stories be fake?
TRUMP: The reporting is false.
ACOSTA: And if I may ask -- I only want to ask --
TRUMP: Jim, you know what it is? Here's the thing. The public isn't -- yous know, they read newspapers. They run into television receiver. They lookout. They don't know if it's true or faux because they're not involved. I'yard involved. I've been involved with this stuff all my life. Simply I'm involved, so I know when you lot're telling the truth or when yous're non. I simply see many, many untruthful things.
And I'll tell yous what else I come across. I see tone. You know, the word tone. The tone is such hatred. I'k really not a bad person, by the way. No, only the tone is such -- I do become good ratings; you have to admit that. The tone is such hatred. I watched this morning a couple of the networks, and I have to say, "Pull a fast one on & Friends" in the morning, they're very honorable people. They're very -- not because they're good, because they hit me also when I do something incorrect. But they have the nearly honest morning testify. That's all I can say. Information technology's the most honest.
Simply the tone, Jim. If you look -- the hatred. I hateful, sometimes somebody gets -- well, you look at your show that goes on at 10:00 in the evening. You merely have a look at that show. That is a constant hitting. The panel is nigh always exclusive anti-Trump. The practiced news is he doesn't have proficient ratings, just the panel is about sectional anti-Trump. And the hatred and venom coming from his rima oris. The hatred coming from other people on your network.
At present I will say this, I sentinel information technology. I see it. I am amazed by it. And I just think you'd exist a lot meliorate off -- I honestly exercise. The public gets information technology, you know. Look, when I go to rallies, they turn effectually, they start screaming at CNN. They want to throw their placards at CNN, you know.
I call up y'all'd do much better by being dissimilar. But you lot just take a await. Take a wait at some of your shows in the forenoon and the evening. If a guest comes out and says something positive near me, it's brutal. Now they'll take this news conference -- I'm actually having a very skillful time, OK? Simply they'll take this news conference -- don't forget, that's the way I won. Remember, I used to requite you a news briefing every fourth dimension I made a spoken communication, which was like every solar day. OK? No, that's how I won! I won with news briefing and probably speeches. I certainly didn't win by people listening to you people. That's for sure.
But I'm having a good time. Tomorrow they'll say Donald Trump rants and raves at the press. I'k not ranting and raving; I'one thousand just telling you lot. Yous know, you're dishonest people. But -- but I'k not ranting and raving. I beloved this. I'm having a good fourth dimension doing information technology. But tomorrow the headlines are going to exist Donald trump rants and raves. I'g not ranting and raving.
Get ahead.
ACOSTA: If I may simply 1 more follow-upward.
TRUMP: Should I let him take a little more? What practise you think, Peter?
(CROSSTALK)
TRUMP: Peter, should I have -- permit him have a little bit more --
ACOSTA: Simply because of this --
TRUMP: Sit down down. Sit down. (INAUDIBLE). We'll get it.
ACOSTA: Just because the assail of fake news and attacking our network, I just desire to ask you, sir --
TRUMP: I'm changing it from fake news, though.
ACOSTA: Doesn't that undermine --
TRUMP: Very fake news.
ACOSTA: Merely aren't y'all --
(LAUGHTER)
TRUMP: Go ahead.
ACOSTA: Existent news, Mr. President.
TRUMP: And you're non related to our new --
ACOSTA: I am not related, sir. I do like the audio of Secretary Acosta, I must say.
TRUMP: You know, I looked at that name. I said expect a minute. Is there whatsoever relation in that location, Alex Acosta?
ACOSTA: I'm certain you checked that out, sir.
TRUMP: No, I checked it. I said -- they said, no, sir. I said practice me a favor, go dorsum and check the family tree.
ACOSTA: Aren't you concerned, sir, that you are undermining the people's faith in the Beginning Amendment, liberty of the press, the press in land, when you lot telephone call stories yous don't like fake news? Why non merely say information technology'southward a story I don't like?
TRUMP: I practice that.
ACOSTA: When yous call information technology fake news, y'all're undermining --
TRUMP: No, I do that.
ACOSTA: -- confidence in our news media.
TRUMP: No, no. I do that.
ACOSTA: Isn't that of import?
TRUMP: I understand what you lot're -- and yous're right most that except this.
See, I know when I should go good and when I should get bad. Sometimes they'll say, wow, that's going to be a great story. And I'll get killed. I know what's adept and bad. I'd exist a pretty good reporter. Not as good as you.
But I know what's good. I know what'due south bad. And when they change information technology and make it really bad, something that should be positive -- sometimes that should exist positive, they'll make OK. They'll even make information technology negative. So I understand it. So -- because I'm in that location. I know what was said, I know who was saying it. I'm there. And then it's very important to me.
Look, I desire to see an honest press. And I started off today by saying that it's and then of import to the public to get an honest press. The press -- the public doesn't believe you people anymore. Now perhaps I had something to practice with that. I don't know. Simply they don't believe you. If you were straight and really told information technology similar it is, every bit Howard Cosell used to say, correct? Of course, he had some questions besides. But if you were straight, I would be your biggest booster. I would be your biggest fan in the world, including bad stories about me.
Just if you go -- as an case, yous're CNN, I mean, it'south story after story later on story is bad. I won. I won. And the other affair, chaos. There'south zilch chaos. Nosotros are running -- this is a fine-tuned machine. And Reince happens to be doing a expert chore, but one-half of his job is putting out lies by the press. You know, I said to him yesterday, this whole Russian federation scam that you guys are building so that you don't talk about the real subject, which is illegal leaks. Simply I watched him yesterday working and so hard to attempt and become that story proper. And I'm maxim here'southward my chief of staff, a actually good guy, did a phenomenal job at RNC. I mean, won the election, correct? Won the presidency. Nosotros got some senators, we got some -- all over the country, you take a look. He's done a great chore.
And I said to myself, you know -- and I said somebody to that was in RNC (ph), you take a expect at Reince. He's working and then difficult merely putting out fires that are fake fires. I mean, they're fake. They're not true. And isn't that a shame, because he'd rather be working on health intendance. He'd rather be working on revenue enhancement reform, Jim. I mean that.
I would be your biggest fan in the world if you treated me right. Now I sort of empathise at that place's a certain bias perchance by Jeff or somebody, you know, for whatever reason. But -- and I understand that, but you've got to exist at least a little bit fair. And that's why the public sees it. They see information technology. They run into it's non fair. You take a look at some of your shows and y'all see the bias and the hatred. And the public is smart; they sympathize it.
OK, yeah, go ahead. Go ahead.
